It already happened with BYD M6. The car itself is redesigned of -now discontinued BYD Song Max. Despite of being obviously dated in term of design and features, BYD M6 still managed sold decently in Southeast Asia due to lack of competitor. Pretty sure BYD would export older model to somewhere else.

I doubt the strategy would be applied exclusively for developing market, as BYD has zero global product exclusively developed for developing market.

The last image is the Chinese market Seal 05 DM-i. It appears that BYD is shifting the tooling for the older warship series outside of China (particularly for developing markets) and keeping the new models for the domestic market.
